french-modernist-still-life-oil-painting-1950s-copy
French Modernist Still Life Oil Painting - 1950s

A wonderfully expressive mid-century Modernist still life, dating to circa 1950, depicting an unusual arrangement of fish, fruit and a dramatically sliced watermelon, executed in oil on canvas.

The composition is rendered with confident, gestural brushwork and a distinctly modernist sensibility. Two stylized fish occupy the foreground, their deep olive and verdigris tones contrasting beautifully against a richly coloured tabletop. Above, a vibrant red watermelon and an assortment of fruit arranged in an elegant pedestal dish introduce striking passages of colour and sculptural form.

The painting’s wonderfully sophisticated palette of crimson, ochre, moss green, charcoal and muted lavender is particularly characteristic of European mid-century painting. Bold black outlines, expressive handling of perspective and deliberately simplified forms lend the composition an almost Fauvist quality.

There is an appealing spontaneity to the work, with areas of loosely applied paint and visible brushwork giving the composition remarkable movement and character. The unconventional pairing of fish and fruit recalls the expressive still-life traditions of early 20th-century European Modernism.

Signed indistinctly at the lower right, the painting is presented in a handsome gilt wood frame with a beautifully stepped profile. The warmth of the frame complements the painting’s rich colouration while providing a pleasing contrast to its modernist execution.

An exceptionally charming and decorative mid-century work, beautifully suited to a collected interior, gallery wall or intimate still-life arrangement.

Details

Period: Circa 1950

Style: Mid-Century Modern / Modernist / Fauvist Influence

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist Unknown, signed indistinctly at lower right

Frame: Gilt wood frame

Condition: The painting and frame are well preserved, with minor signs of age consistent with the period.

Dimensions

Framed:

Width: 17.60 in

Height: 10.43 in

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0411/7145/2066/files/48D31F89-5F38-4517-B693-1B5946AF22F8.jpg?v=1792101946
