Matisse created a remarkable series of etchings to accompany Mallarmé’s poetry, translating the written word into compositions of extraordinary simplicity, fluidity and grace.

This particularly evocative composition depicts the bow of a sailing vessel cutting through gently undulating waters, accompanied by a graceful arrangement of seabirds in flight. A solitary figure stands upon the deck, lending a subtle human presence to the otherwise expansive maritime scene.

Executed with Matisse’s characteristic economy of gesture, the illustration captures a remarkable sense of movement through its sweeping diagonal lines, delicately articulated waves and elegantly simplified birds. The dramatic perspective of the vessel creates a compelling contrast with the openness of the surrounding sea, demonstrating the artist’s extraordinary ability to convey atmosphere and spatial depth through the most restrained means.

Presented in a custom Italian giltwood bamboo-style frame, the artwork is beautifully complemented by the frame’s warm antiqued finish and sculptural detailing. Housed under glass, the classical character of the framing provides a sophisticated counterpoint to the modernity and simplicity of Matisse’s composition.

A wonderfully atmospheric example of Matisse’s celebrated approach to illustrated literature, this plate would make an elegant addition to a thoughtfully collected interior, particularly appealing displayed individually or alongside other works from the Poésies series.

Details

Artist: After Henri Matisse (1869–1954)

Title: Poésies de Stéphane Mallarmé — Sailboat and Seabirds Composition

Origin: France / Switzerland

Period: Circa 1970s

Medium: Vintage illustrated plate after an original Matisse etching

Framing: Custom Italian giltwood bamboo-style frame

Glazing: Glass

Condition: Very good vintage condition, with natural variations and character to the gilt finish.

Dimensions: 9.5” x 12”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0411/7145/2066/files/C745CD5A-7497-4855-984A-F1FAA3FDC3AB.png?v=1792695861
