Cubist Portrait of Andy Warhol -Peter Keil 1972
A vivid and boldly expressive cubist portrait by German artist Peter Robert Keil, depicting the unmistakable visage of Andy Warhol in Keil’s signature style — with exaggerated features, vibrant color blocks, and sweeping black contours. Executed in oil on artist’s board, the work is housed in a gilt wood frame and presented under glass.
Signed lower right, and inscribed “Andy Warhol” within the composition, the painting captures the intersection of two icons of 20th-century art: Keil and Warhol. The face is rendered in electric hues of pink, green, and orange, layered over a swirling, gestural white background that accentuates the energy and immediacy of the work.
Peter Robert Keil (b. 1942) is a German neo-expressionist and protégé of Berlin’s postwar avant-garde scene. Early in his artistic career, Keil studied under the tutelage of Otto Nagel and later spent formative years in Paris and Mallorca, where he worked in proximity to Pablo Picasso. Keil’s exposure to Picasso’s Cubist innovations deeply influenced his visual language, seen in his fractured forms and fluid, intuitive linework. His paintings blend the vibrancy of street art with the raw emotion of German expressionism.
