Expressionist Face Motif Ceramic Charger by E. Marsay, 1977
A striking hand-painted ceramic charger, dated 1977 and signed E. Marsay, featuring a bold abstract portrait in rich ochre, deep cobalt, and muted green glazes. The stylized face recalls both Cubist influences and ancient Mediterranean forms, giving the piece a timeless yet modern character. The surface has a beautiful crackled glaze finish, enhancing its sculptural presence.
This plate measures 11 inches in diameter and is fitted for wall display, making it equally suited as a decorative artwork or as part of a curated tabletop collection. The incised signature and date on the underside authenticate its studio origin.
Pieces from the 1970s era of studio ceramics often drew inspiration from Picasso’s ceramics and the European modernist tradition, and this work reflects that same expressive lineage.
