A rare and exceptionally beautiful 17th-century Flemish verdure tapestry fragment, displaying the masterful weaving, nuanced colouration, and botanical lyricism that defined the great weaving ateliers of Flanders during the Baroque period. Surviving fragments of this scale—over 6½ feet in length—are increasingly scarce on the market, particularly examples with such rich blues, greens, and ochres still present.

This tapestry depicts a classic verdure landscape: lush foliage rendered in layered tonalities of indigo, celadon, soft gold, umber, and deep forest green. A graceful tree rises through the composition, framed by stylized florals and a distant architectural balustrade—motifs characteristic of the Flemish workshops of Oudenaarde, Brussels, and Audenarde in the late 1600s.

The hand-woven wool and silk yarns show centuries of gentle wear, repairs, and abrash, which only enhance its authenticity and historic charm. Its format—as a tall, narrow panel—suggests it was once part of a larger suite, possibly a room-scale wall hanging or a decorative border from a grand tapestry ensemble.

Mounted with a burgundy textile border for preservation, the piece hangs beautifully as an art object: sculptural, textural, and atmospheric. Whether displayed in a hallway, stairwell, or as a statement vertical artwork, it brings the gravitas of Old-World craftsmanship into a contemporary interior.

  • 17th-century Flemish tapestries are increasingly scarce due to age, fragility, and museum acquisition.
  • Large surviving fragments of this vertical format are uncommon; many were lost, cut down, or separated.
  • Colour retention—particularly the blues and greens—is unusually strong for a textile of this age.
  • Verdure compositions were highly prized in their time and remain some of the most sought-after Flemish weavings today.
  • Collector-level provenance potential, ideal for designers, decorators, and serious textile collectors.
