A finely modeled mid-century plaster bust depicting Hermes, rendered in the classical tradition and produced in England during the 1940s. The sculpture draws directly from Greco-Roman prototypes, presenting the youthful messenger god with softly articulated features, tightly curled hair, and a serene, idealized expression characteristic of academic classical revival works.

The bust is crisply cast and raised on an integral circular socle, the front inscribed “HERMES”, reinforcing its academic and referential origins. Subtle asymmetries in the shoulders and the naturalistic modeling of the torso lend the piece a sculptural vitality, while the surface retains a beautifully aged patina with gentle tonal variation that enhances its sense of antiquity.

Works of this type were often produced for artists’ studios, schools, or as decorative objects for cultivated interiors, reflecting the enduring influence of classical sculpture in early-to-mid 20th-century England. The scale makes it particularly versatile—ideal for a bookshelf, mantel, console, or layered vignette—while still commanding presence as a sculptural object.

Condition

Good vintage condition consistent with age. Surface wear, light scuffs, and patination to the plaster are present and appropriate, contributing to the character and authenticity of the piece. No structural instability observed.
