La Parisienne - Peter Robert Keil - 1970s

A striking circa 1970s work by German artist Peter Robert Keil (b. 1942), depicting an abstracted female face rendered in sweeping black brushwork against a warm neutral ground.

Particularly strong in its restraint, the composition is built from a remarkably economical series of gestures. Arched brows and almond-shaped eyes are balanced by an elongated, dramatically curved nose, while the mouth and jaw are suggested through only a handful of assured strokes. The resulting portrait feels at once graphic and elegant, with the open areas of the composition becoming as important as the painted line itself.

Keil developed his distinctive artistic language within the postwar European art world. Otto Nagel was an important early mentor, and during his formative years Keil moved within a circle that included artists such as Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, Eugen Schönebeck and Joachim Schmettau. During extended periods in Mallorca, Keil also became acquainted with Joan Miró, whose freedom of line and intuitive approach to composition became an important influence. Keil’s biographical accounts additionally describe encounters with Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, whose work formed part of the broader modernist environment surrounding his development.

By the 1970s, Keil had increasingly embraced the expressive portraiture for which he became best known. Faces were reduced to exaggerated eyes, elongated features and rapidly applied lines, reflecting his interest in both European Expressionism and the freedom of postwar figurative painting.

This monochromatic example is especially appealing for its almost calligraphic quality. The absence of colour focuses attention entirely on the movement of Keil’s brush and the personality conveyed through remarkably few marks.

The work is beautifully presented in a custom black wood frame with a giltwood inner border, creating a sophisticated juxtaposition between Keil’s modernist composition and a more traditional presentation. Finished under museum glass for enhanced clarity and protection while minimizing reflections.
