Cubist Equestrian Earthenware Ceramic - 20th Century

A striking and highly decorative mid-century glazed earthenware charger, likely French or Italian, dating to circa 1950s–1960s. Entirely hand-painted, the composition depicts a stylized equestrian figure rendered with an expressive, almost calligraphic freedom characteristic of the postwar European ceramic movement.

The central horse and rider are outlined in bold black strokes and surrounded by loose passages of cobalt blue, emerald green, ochre and warm terracotta. A rhythmic, hand-painted border encircles the composition, giving the piece a wonderfully spontaneous quality. The deliberately simplified forms, graphic linework and saturated Mediterranean palette reveal the unmistakable influence of Cubism and the artist-designed ceramics produced in Vallauris and throughout Italy during the mid-20th century, particularly the ceramic work associated with Pablo Picasso and his contemporaries.

At 14.5 inches in diameter, the unusually large scale gives the piece considerable presence. More akin to a ceramic artwork than conventional tableware, it would be exceptional displayed individually on a wall, mounted on a stand, or incorporated into a collection of important postwar ceramics.

The charger is unmarked, and while its precise workshop remains unidentified, the confident freehand decoration, substantial earthenware body, glaze and distinctly Mediterranean visual vocabulary suggest French or Italian production. Unattributed examples of this quality are increasingly compelling as decorative objects in their own right, particularly when they so strongly capture the experimentation and artistic freedom of the European ceramic renaissance.

The surface retains a beautiful network of fine glaze crazing and subtle irregularities inherent to the handmade and fired process, adding depth and character to the piece. Minor age-related wear and imperfections are consistent with its vintage nature and contribute to its wonderfully individual appearance.
