Early 20th Century Italian Hand-Painted Landscape Cabinet
A beautifully executed early 20th century Italian painted cabinet, distinguished by its richly decorated surfaces and architectural presence. Hand-painted throughout, the cabinet features an enchanting panoramic landscape extending across the upper doors, depicting a tranquil river valley with dramatic cliffs, classical ruins, distant temples, and finely rendered figures and wildlife. The composition recalls the romantic Italian capriccio tradition, lending the piece the atmosphere of an imagined Grand Tour landscape.
The lower section is equally refined, with delicately painted neoclassical reserves portraying allegorical figures above four elongated panels decorated with elegant urns overflowing with stylized botanical motifs. The muted palette of soft creams, sage greys, warm ochres, and faded blues has developed a beautifully timeworn patina, enhancing the cabinet’s decorative character while preserving its original hand-painted artistry.
The interior has been painted in a contrasting blue-green and offers generous shelved storage for linens, tableware, books, or decorative objects. Designed in the traditional manner, the cabinet separates into two sections for easier transportation and installation. Original decorative iron escutcheons remain in place, complemented by a later tassel accent.
