Femme Assise - Pablo Picasso - 1953
An extraordinary early 19th century Italian giltwood frame, richly hand-carved with scrolling acanthus and foliate ornamentation, presented within its original period shadow box retaining the original glass. The deeply sculptural frame displays the romantic exuberance associated with Italian Baroque revival craftsmanship, with an exceptional level of preservation throughout.
Housed within the frame is a 1953 Femme Assise Picasso study, the composition creates a striking dialogue between Old World ornamentation and the restrained geometry of mid-century modernism. The juxtaposition feels both scholarly and highly decorative — transforming the piece into an object more akin to a cabinet of curiosities than a traditional framed work.
The shadow box itself, with its dark wood surround and original aged glass, lends remarkable depth and atmosphere while beautifully protecting the delicate gilt surface within. The interior frame retains a luminous, warm gilded finish with graceful age-appropriate patina and minor irregularities consistent with early 19th century craftsmanship.
