French Tilt-Top Wine Table, 19th Century

A wonderfully characterful antique French tilt-top table dating to the 19th century, retaining a beautifully aged surface and the understated construction associated with French provincial furniture.

The circular top is constructed from wide planks of timber and displays an exceptional untouched-looking patina developed through generations of use. Scattered marks, tonal variations, old stains, knots and gentle wear remain visible across the surface, lending the table the kind of depth and authenticity that cannot be convincingly reproduced.

The tabletop is supported by a handsome trestle-form base with shaped sledge feet, joined by a horizontal stretcher. Of particular interest is the traditional tilting mechanism beneath the top, allowing the table to be raised vertically when not in use. Tables of this form were practical pieces of country furniture, designed to be moved or stored against a wall when additional floor space was required.

Its restrained construction and sculptural silhouette give the piece a distinctly modern presence despite its age. When tilted upright, the large circular top becomes almost architectural; opened, it makes an exceptionally charming occasional, breakfast, wine or small dining table.

The combination of primitive French craftsmanship, honest wear and warm, time-softened timber makes this a particularly decorative example. Equally at home in a traditional interior or juxtaposed with contemporary furniture and art.
