Grand Tour Style Polychrome Terracotta Urn

An exceptionally decorative lidded terracotta urn of classical inspiration, distinguished by its elaborate polychrome decoration, richly marbled surface and striking architectural silhouette.

Drawing upon the artistic traditions of ancient Greece and the decorative language of the Grand Tour, the urn features a beautifully proportioned ovoid body with gracefully scrolled handles, a raised circular pedestal and a dramatic conical lid surmounted by a rounded finial.

The surface is richly embellished with stylized classical figures, their dark profiles and intricately rendered garments appearing amongst an exuberant arrangement of scrolling foliage, ornamental flourishes and geometric motifs. An unusually sophisticated palette of vivid malachite green, cobalt blue, muted terracotta and warm ivory lends the decoration remarkable depth and visual interest.

Particularly noteworthy is the urn’s elaborate faux-marble ground, with delicate amber and russet veining extending across the entire surface. Gilded Greek key borders encircle the upper body, neck and pedestal, introducing a distinctly neoclassical architectural quality.

The decoration continues around the reverse and across the removable lid, where further classical figures and ornamental motifs create a wonderfully considered composition from every angle.

Both sculptural and highly decorative, the urn evokes the romantic fascination with classical antiquity that characterized the Grand Tour tradition. Its unusual combination of expressive figuration, intricate surface ornament and boldly contrasting colours gives the piece a distinctly collected character.

An exceptional accent for a library, mantel, console or curated collection of antique ceramics, equally compelling displayed individually or amongst other classical objects.
