The rounded vessel is decorated by hand with a wonderfully free, almost calligraphic composition of perched birds, flowering branches, foliage and stylized landscape elements. Rather than the precise symmetry associated with more formal porcelain decoration, the painterly handling gives the piece an appealing artisanal quality, with variations in line, density and surface that reveal the hand of its maker.
The monochromatic brown decoration is particularly striking against the creamy porcelain body, lending the vase an understated, earthy quality while retaining the refinement of traditional Asian ceramic forms.
