Monumental Plaster Female Torso Sculpture - 20th Century
A commanding 20th-century plaster figural sculpture, depicting a fragmented classical female torso and legs in the tradition of an artist’s anatomical study. Beautifully modeled and intentionally reduced to its essential form, the work has the quiet monumentality of an archaeological fragment while retaining a distinctly modern sculptural presence.
The figure is rendered in warm, softly aged plaster with a wonderfully tactile, matte surface. Its abbreviated composition—without head or arms and terminating above the knees—places emphasis on volume, proportion and the contours of the human form. The result recalls both classical Greco-Roman statuary and the modernist fascination with fragmented antiquity that informed much of 20th-century European sculpture.
Presented on a custom black pedestal base, the contrast between the pale, timeworn plaster and architectural dark stand gives the sculpture a particularly strong gallery presence. At 25 inches high, it is substantial enough to serve as a focal point on a console, pedestal or commode while remaining exceptionally versatile within an interior.
The plaster displays areas of surface wear, patination and some losses, including visible losses to the surface consistent with age and material. These have been left untouched and contribute to the sculpture’s evocative, atelier-like character. Please refer to photographs for condition.
An impressive decorative sculpture with the presence of a collected studio or academy piece—equally compelling within a classical interior or juxtaposed against contemporary furnishings.
