La Séductrice - Peter Robert Keil - 1970s

A striking circa 1970s work by German artist Peter Robert Keil (b. 1942), depicting an abstracted female face rendered in sweeping, expressive black brushwork against a warm neutral ground.

This particularly elegant example of Keil’s figurative work is defined by its economy of line. The sitter’s elongated features, heavily outlined eyes and subtly smiling mouth are constructed through a remarkably limited series of confident gestures. Areas of dense black are juxtaposed with passages where the brush visibly thins and lifts from the surface, preserving the immediacy of the artist’s hand.

Keil developed his distinctive artistic language within the postwar European art world. Otto Nagel served as an important early mentor, while Keil’s formative circle included artists such as Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, Eugen Schönebeck and Joachim Schmettau. During extended periods in Mallorca, Keil also became acquainted with Joan Miró, whose freedom of line and intuitive approach to composition proved particularly influential. Keil’s biographical accounts additionally describe encounters with Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, placing his development within the broader environment of European modernism.

By the 1970s, Keil had moved increasingly toward the expressive portraiture for which he became best known, reducing the human figure to exaggerated features, rapidly applied brushwork and bold passages of colour or, as seen here, an especially restrained monochromatic palette.

The simplicity of this work gives it an almost calligraphic quality, while the sitter’s asymmetrical gaze and subtle smile lend the portrait a distinctive sense of personality.
