La Muse Noire — Peter Robert Keil - 1970s

A striking circa 1970s work by German artist Peter Robert Keil (b. 1942), depicting an abstracted female face rendered in sweeping, confident black brushwork against a warm neutral ground.

Characteristic of Keil’s highly recognizable figurative vocabulary, the composition reduces the sitter to a series of fluid, almost calligraphic gestures. Exaggerated almond-shaped eyes, an elongated nose and dramatically simplified features reveal Keil’s engagement with European Modernism, particularly the influence of Picasso, while retaining the immediacy and spontaneity that came to define his own work.

Keil emerged from postwar Berlin, where painter Otto Nagel became an early mentor. During his studies and formative years he moved within an important circle of German artists that included Georg Baselitz, Eugen Schönebeck, Markus Lüpertz and Joachim Schmettau. During extended periods in Mallorca, Keil also became acquainted with Joan Miró, visiting the artist in his studio on multiple occasions. Keil has described Miró as an important mentor and influence on his approach to colour, expression and the intuitive act of painting. 

Keil also encountered Pablo Picasso, an artist he greatly admired from an early age. Keil’s own biographical accounts additionally describe encounters with Picasso and Salvador Dalí and cite Picasso, Miró and Dalí among the important influences on his artistic development. 

By the 1970s, Keil had moved decisively away from the more representational work of his early career toward a freer and increasingly expressive language characterized by rapid brushwork, abstraction and boldly simplified figures. This work is an especially graphic example of that direction, with the restrained monochromatic palette placing particular emphasis on the movement and assurance of the artist’s line.

The work has been newly presented in a custom black wood frame with a giltwood inner border, creating a sophisticated contrast between the expressive modern composition and its more traditional presentation. It is fitted with museum glass, offering enhanced clarity and protection while minimizing reflections.

The juxtaposition of Keil’s bold modernist portraiture with the tailored black-and-gilt frame gives the piece a particularly decorative presence—equally compelling as a standalone work or incorporated into a layered collection of modern and antique art.
