Rare 19th Century Carved Wood Black Forest Chairs - Italy
A remarkable pair of 19th-century Black Forest carved wood chairs, distinguished by their highly sculptural, naturalistic backs conceived as intertwined tree trunks and branches.
Each chair features an elaborate openwork back, hand-carved to resemble a network of gnarled branches with textured bark surfaces and deliberately irregular forms. Carved foliate details emerge around the base of the backrests, adding another layer of depth to the woodland-inspired composition. The craftsmanship gives the chairs an almost fantastical quality, characteristic of the fascination with nature and rustic imagery associated with Black Forest decorative arts of the 19th century.
The dramatic backs are balanced by elegantly shaped seats and cabriole-form legs, creating an unusual juxtaposition between the exuberant carving and more restrained furniture form. The seats are presently upholstered in an olive-green velvet, which complements the rich, warm tone and patina of the carved wood.
Particularly compelling as sculptural objects, these chairs would make striking occasional or fireside chairs and are equally successful displayed as decorative works of art within a collected interior.
The pair retains a beautifully aged surface with variations in tone, minor marks, wear and other evidence of age and use. The upholstery shows wear, particularly to the edges, and could either be retained for its character or replaced to suit an interior.
