A charming 19th century equestrian portrait depicting a dark bay horse identified as “Wildfire,” standing within the quiet interior of a stable.

Painted in oil on canvas, the horse is shown in profile against a beautifully restrained architectural setting, illuminated by soft natural light entering through the stable opening. The artist’s subdued palette of warm umber, straw, muted green and soft grey gives the composition an atmospheric quality, while the carefully rendered horse remains the clear focal point.

The name “WILDFIRE” appears along the lower edge of the composition, a particularly appealing detail that gives the portrait a sense of provenance and personality. Equestrian portraits of this nature were traditionally commissioned to commemorate prized horses and remain highly collectible examples of 19th century sporting art.

The painting is especially notable for its elaborate period giltwood frame, richly ornamented with repeating foliate, geometric and beaded decoration. The aged gilding has developed a wonderfully mellow surface, with areas of wear and darkened patina that beautifully complement the understated tones of the painting.

The reverse reveals traditional canvas construction and the substantial hand-built wooden frame, further contributing to the work’s authentic antique character.

An evocative piece of 19th century equestrian art with considerable decorative presence—equally suited to a traditional interior or as an unexpected counterpoint within a more contemporary, collected space.

19th century.
