19th Century Italian Painted and Gilt Commode with Dog-Form Handles

A wonderfully decorative 19th century Italian commode, retaining a beautifully aged painted surface in muted terracotta red with gilt detailing throughout.

The commode features two generous drawers framed by hand-painted gilt borders and fitted with particularly charming figural brass handles formed as opposing dogs. Each handle is supported between a pair of stylized hounds, giving the otherwise refined casework an unexpected and whimsical sculptural detail. The canine-form hardware is wonderfully expressive and adds considerably to the individual character of the piece.

Decorative brass escutcheons punctuate the centre of each drawer, while the shaped apron below is enriched with carved and gilded shell and foliate ornament. The case rests on four elegant cabriole-form legs, giving the substantial chest a graceful, elevated silhouette.

The softly faded red ground and worn gilding have developed a beautiful, time-softened patina. Areas of rubbing, tonal variation, exposed underlayers and surface wear remain visible throughout, creating the depth and authenticity associated with centuries-old painted furniture.

The drawer interiors have been lined at a later date in a small-scale floral paper, providing a charming contrast to the aged exterior.
