20th Century Cubist Portrait Drawing
A striking 20th century Cubist portrait drawing, presented in an exceptionally decorative 19th century giltwood frame.
Executed with a restrained, almost architectural economy of line, the composition depicts an abstracted human face reduced to a series of intersecting geometric forms. The elongated nose, asymmetrical eyes and sweeping contours of the brow and mouth reflect the influence of the European Cubist and modernist movements, recalling the experimental portraiture that emerged through the work of Picasso, Cocteau and their contemporaries.
The simplicity of the drawing is particularly effective against the elaborate antique frame. Dating to the 19th century, the deeply moulded giltwood frame is richly ornamented with repeating foliate decoration and retains a beautifully aged surface, with areas of wear and patination that speak to its considerable age. The juxtaposition of a spare modernist drawing within an ornate period frame gives the piece a distinctly collected, sophisticated character.
A highly decorative work that would sit equally well within a traditional interior or as a contrasting element in a more contemporary setting.
