Artist’s Studio Plaster Figure of a Standing Male Nude, 20th Century
A compelling 20th-century artist’s studio sculpture, modelled in plaster and depicting a standing male nude in a relaxed contrapposto pose. Found in New York City, the work has the expressive, unfinished character associated with sculptors’ studies, studio models and working maquettes.
The figure is rendered with a strong understanding of anatomy while retaining the immediacy of the modelling process. One arm rests at the hip while the opposing arm falls naturally alongside the body, creating an asymmetrical stance that gives the sculpture a quiet sense of movement and presence.
Particularly striking is the sculpture’s layered and highly distressed surface. Areas of charcoal-black and grey pigment move across the torso, arms and face, contrasting dramatically against the exposed chalky white plaster. Scrapes, losses, abrasions and remnants of earlier surface treatments remain visible throughout, giving the piece the appearance of an object that has lived and evolved within an artist’s working studio.
The face is deliberately restrained, with the contrasting dark pigment emphasizing one side and giving the figure an almost modernist quality. Viewed from a distance, the fragmented monochromatic surface lends the sculpture a graphic, contemporary presence; at close range, the irregularities reveal the hand-worked nature of the plaster.
Raised on its original integral plaster base, the figure works exceptionally well as a large-scale sculptural object within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
