Charcoal Figural Drawing in the Manner of Jean Cocteau

A striking figural drawing in charcoal, presented in an exceptional early 19th century carved wood and gilt frame.

Executed with a remarkable economy of line, the composition depicts two overlapping profiles rendered through fluid, continuous contours and angular, almost Cubist passages. The elongated features, expressive eyes and highly stylized treatment of the figures recall the distinctive graphic language associated with French artist, poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau.

Cocteau’s celebrated drawings frequently explored the human profile, mythology and the relationship between two intertwined figures, often reducing his subjects to their most essential lines. While unsigned and not attributed to Cocteau, this work possesses a distinctly French modernist sensibility and is best described as in the manner of Jean Cocteau.
