D. Sarti Trompe-L’Oeil Ceramic Cushion Stool, Italy - 20th Century

A wonderfully unusual trompe-l’œil ceramic stool by D. Sarti, dated 1997, conceived as an extravagant stack of three upholstered cushions.

Entirely modeled in ceramic, the piece creates a remarkable illusion of softness and textile through extraordinarily detailed relief work. Each of the three stacked cushions is individually decorated with elaborate passementerie, including braided cord, woven latticework, tassels, fringe and ornamental swags. Even the seams and piping of traditional upholstery have been carefully articulated in clay.

Finished in a softly variegated ivory-white glaze, the restrained monochromatic palette allows the sculptural quality of the decoration to take precedence. Subtle tonal variation settles into the recessed details, emphasizing the intricacy of the modeled trim and giving the surface an appealing sense of depth.

The lowest cushion is raised upon four wonderfully modeled bun feet, completing the playful illusion of an upholstered piece of furniture. The uppermost cushion incorporates a flat central surface, allowing the piece to function beautifully as an occasional table, drinks table, stool or purely sculptural object.

The work sits somewhere between functional furniture and decorative sculpture, drawing on the tradition of trompe-l’œil ceramics while possessing the wit and theatricality associated with late 20th-century Postmodern design.

Signed “D. Sarti ’97” to the side of the lower cushion.

An exceptionally decorative and conversation-starting piece, particularly compelling in an eclectic or collected interior.
