English Mahogany Library Steps - Early 20th Century

A handsome and highly decorative set of antique English library steps, dating to the early 20th century and crafted in richly toned mahogany.

The three-tier form is particularly architectural, combining practical function with beautifully considered cabinetmaking. Each step is supported by an elegant framework of sweeping scroll-form brackets, turned and reeded uprights, and finely tapered legs. Incised geometric detailing along the apron, corner blocks and supports lends the piece a subtle neoclassical character.

Designed for reaching the upper shelves of a library or bookcase, these steps were conceived as a piece of furniture in their own right. The open construction gives the form an especially sculptural quality, with the curved supports and turned elements creating an attractive silhouette from every angle.
