A beautifully composed early 20th-century French verdure tapestry depicting an idyllic countryside landscape. The scene is framed by richly stylized trees with birds perched among the foliage, opening toward a gently flowing river and a small country house nestled in the distance. Soft hills and layered foliage create depth while maintaining the decorative charm typical of French pastoral tapestry designs.

The palette is particularly harmonious, combining muted blues, soft greens, warm ochres, and creamy neutrals—colors that lend the piece a refined and livable presence within an interior.

The reverse reveals the hand-worked weaving structure, with visible wool thread tails and color changes typical of traditional tapestry construction. These loose yarn ends are a natural result of the weaving process, where individual colored wool wefts are worked in sections to build the composition. This technique—often executed on a vertical or horizontal loom—allows the weaver to achieve the detailed pictorial elements seen in the foliage, birds, and architectural forms.

Because each color area is woven separately and interlocked, the reverse side retains these characteristic thread ends, providing clear evidence of its handwoven construction rather than machine production.

Notes

A decorative and atmospheric textile that works equally well as a large wall hanging, above a console or bed, or layered within a traditional interior. The scale and pastoral subject make it particularly suited to classic European-inspired spaces.
