Equestrian Portrait of Two Horses - 19th Century

An impressive 19th-century equestrian painting depicting two finely rendered horses standing together within an idyllic pastoral landscape. Executed in oil on canvas, the work combines the tradition of formal equestrian portraiture with the softer, romantic character of a country landscape.

The two chestnut horses dominate the composition, their bodies overlapping in an intimate and beautifully balanced arrangement. Each is carefully individualized through subtle differences in stance, expression and colouring. Rich russet coats are modelled with warm highlights, while dark manes, tails and lower legs provide depth and definition.

Behind the horses, a magnificent mature tree rises through the composition, surrounded by softly rendered foliage, distant countryside and a rustic fence. The restrained landscape palette of muted greens, ochres and pale blues provides a particularly handsome backdrop to the warmth of the animals.

The artist demonstrates considerable attention to equine anatomy and character, particularly in the delicately articulated heads, alert expressions, musculature and carefully observed legs and hooves.
