French Cubist Still Life Oil Painting - 1950s

A wonderfully evocative mid-century Cubist still life, dating to circa 1950, executed in oil on canvas with an incorporated antique newspaper collage.

The composition brings together fragmented musical instruments, printed ephemera and abstract architectural forms, arranged in a distinctly Cubist manner. A sophisticated palette of deep cobalt blue, turquoise, ochre, ivory and charcoal lends the work a particularly striking graphic quality.

Of special interest is the inclusion of an actual miniature newspaper clipping, carefully incorporated into the painted composition. This unusual mixed-media element introduces a compelling trompe-l’œil quality, blurring the distinction between painted representation and physical collage.

The artist’s confident use of geometric abstraction, expressive brushwork and overlapping perspectives reflects the influence of early 20th-century European Cubism, particularly the still-life traditions associated with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.

Despite its intimate scale, the painting possesses a remarkable visual presence. The juxtaposition of rich colour, angular forms and printed material creates a composition that feels both playful and intellectually engaging.

Unsigned, the work is presented in a handsome period-style gilt wood frame with a beautifully stepped profile and warm, aged patina. The traditional frame provides an elegant contrast to the modernist composition.

An exceptionally decorative example of mid-century Cubist painting, ideally suited to a thoughtfully collected interior or intimate gallery wall.
