Georges Braque, “Bijoux de Braque,” Original French Exhibition Poster, 1969
An exceptional original French exhibition poster from 1969 celebrating the celebrated jewellery designs of Georges Braque (1882–1963), one of the most influential figures of 20th-century modern art and a pioneering founder of Cubism.
Created for the Bijoux de Braque exhibition held at the Galerie des Ponchettes in Nice, France, from January 23 to February 23, 1969, the poster presents a striking composition of abstracted forms rendered in deep cobalt blue and black against a softly modulated pale blue ground.
The composition exemplifies Braque’s distinctive modernist vocabulary, combining bold, organic silhouettes with a sophisticated interplay of colour, movement and negative space. The rich blue tones and dramatic black forms create a particularly compelling visual presence, reflecting the artist’s enduring fascination with abstraction and the relationship between form and space.
The exhibition celebrated Braque’s remarkable exploration of jewellery design, an important and lesser-known chapter of his artistic legacy. Developed in collaboration with master jeweller Henri-Michel Heger de Löwenfeld, these designs translated Braque’s artistic language into sculptural objects of extraordinary refinement.
Beneath the artwork, the elegantly restrained typography reads Bijoux de Braque – Réalisés par Henri-Michel Heger de Löwenfeld, providing a wonderful example of French mid-century exhibition graphic design.
Printed in Paris by E. Guillot, Maître-Imprimeur, the poster retains its original printed inscriptions along the lower margin, including Imprimé en France.
The work is beautifully presented in a custom silver-gilt frame, its softly patinated metallic finish complementing the subtle blues and rich blacks of the composition. Protected beneath museum glass, the presentation offers exceptional clarity while preserving the historical character of the original poster.
An evocative example of postwar French exhibition design, this original 1969 poster would make a sophisticated addition to a collection of modernist art, particularly appealing to admirers of Braque, Cubism and 20th-century French graphic design.
