Hand-Painted Folk Art Harbor Scene Trunk - 1970s

A charming and richly detailed hand-painted folk art trunk created by American artist Dan Andres in the 1970s. Known as the “Gazebo” box from the Fair Acres series, this whimsical storage chest transforms a utilitarian form into a miniature architectural fantasy, with every surface thoughtfully decorated by hand.

The front presents an idyllic harbor scene viewed from a gazebo overlooking a tranquil waterfront. Sailboats drift across blue water toward a distant village and church, while climbing vines frame the composition beneath a deep cobalt sky. The illusionistic painted veranda, checkerboard flooring, and trellis create remarkable depth, giving the piece the appearance of looking through an open pavilion onto the landscape beyond.

The sides continue the panoramic scene seamlessly, while the lid is finished with an overhead trellis draped in climbing greenery. Opening the trunk reveals a beautifully papered interior lined in a delicate repeating geometric floral pattern, demonstrating the same level of craftsmanship found throughout the exterior.

Raised on shaped bracket feet and fitted with aged brass hardware, the trunk functions equally well as a decorative storage chest, blanket box, or statement accent in a library, bedroom, or sitting room. Its vibrant palette of cobalt blue, verdant green, ivory, and black recalls both American folk painting and the theatrical perspective of traditional trompe-l’œil decoration.

This example retains its original label to the underside and is accompanied by its original House of Ryerson purchase receipt dated September 1, 1989, adding desirable provenance. Signed on the side by the artist.

Condition:
Very good vintage condition consistent with age and use. Minor paint losses, light surface wear, and a small dent and nick to the front panel, all of which contribute to the authentic character of this hand-painted piece. Interior remains clean and beautifully preserved.
