Hermès Paris Porcelain Sailing Ship Ashtray
A striking vintage porcelain ashtray by Hermès Paris, featuring a wonderfully graphic nautical composition depicting a traditional sailing vessel with boldly striped sails.
The central scene is rendered in a sophisticated palette of scarlet red, turquoise, black and warm ivory, with crisp geometric linework giving the design an almost Modernist quality. The ship is shown under full sail above stylized turquoise waves, creating a particularly lively and decorative composition.
The substantial rectangular porcelain form is finished with Hermès’ characteristic attention to detail, including a brilliant white glazed ground, vivid red linear border and finely applied gilt edging. Four sculpted cigarette rests are incorporated into the sides, each accented in gold.
Originally conceived as an ashtray, the piece translates beautifully to contemporary interiors as a vide-poche or decorative catchall—ideal on a cocktail table, desk, console or bedside table for keys, jewelry and other small objects. The combination of nautical imagery, saturated colour and gilded detailing makes it equally compelling displayed simply as an objet.
A handsome example of Hermès decorative porcelain and an especially appealing piece for collectors of vintage Hermès, nautical design and sophisticated French accessories.
