Italian Gilt Mirror - 19th Century
An exquisite 19th-century Italian giltwood mirror, distinguished by its wonderfully sculptural silhouette, elaborate foliate carvings and richly patinated gilded finish.
Beautifully proportioned, the mirror features an intricately carved frame adorned with exuberant scrolling acanthus leaves, sweeping C-scrolls and an ornamental crest. The dramatic, openwork design reflects the influence of the Italian Baroque tradition, lending the piece a remarkable sense of movement and architectural character.
The original gilded surface has developed a particularly beautiful patina, with areas of gentle wear, exposed underlying finishes and subtle variations in tone that speak to its age and history. These timeworn details lend the mirror an appealing sense of authenticity and understated grandeur.
The mirror plate has been replaced, providing a clear, functional reflection while preserving the integrity and character of the antique giltwood surround.
A wonderfully decorative example of 19th-century Italian craftsmanship, equally compelling displayed on its own as a sculptural wall accent or incorporated into a thoughtfully collected arrangement of antique paintings and objects.
