Italian Hand-Painted Figural and Animal Decorated Ceramic Vase
A wonderfully expressive antique Italian ceramic vase, distinguished by its richly hand-painted decoration and beautifully aged surface.
Of generous baluster form, the vessel is decorated around its circumference with a lively narrative of figures on horseback, deer and other animals set amongst stylized trees and foliage. The palette of ochre, deep blue, green, black and muted rose is particularly charming, with boldly striped borders framing the composition at the shoulder and base.
The decoration has a wonderfully naïve, almost folkloric quality, recalling the long tradition of Italian painted earthenware and maiolica. Rather than a formal repeating pattern, the imagery unfolds as the vase is turned, giving the piece a particularly sculptural and individual presence.
The surface displays an attractive time-worn patina, including craquelure, rubbing, glaze irregularities and areas of loss consistent with age and use. These imperfections contribute considerably to the character of the piece and reinforce its decorative, collected quality.
An unusual and highly decorative example of Italian pottery, equally compelling displayed alone on a console or pedestal, or incorporated into a layered collection of antique ceramics and objects.
