A wonderfully sculptural vintage Italian bottle opener in the charming form of a hedgehog, rendered in richly detailed silver plate.
The compact figure is beautifully modeled, with individually articulated quills, finely engraved fur and a characterful face. Despite its diminutive scale, the piece is notably heavy and substantial in the hand, giving it the quality of a small piece of silver sculpture rather than simply a functional bar accessory.
Concealed discreetly within the underside is the integrated bottle-opening mechanism, allowing the hedgehog’s sculptural form to remain uninterrupted when displayed. The combination of whimsical subject matter and finely worked metal is characteristic of the playful yet sophisticated decorative accessories produced in Italy during the 20th century.
