Large French Cubist Figure Oil Painting - 1952
A striking French oil on canvas dating to the 1950s, depicting an expressive figural composition executed in the Cubist tradition. Boldly delineated forms overlap and intersect across the canvas, creating a wonderfully graphic arrangement of fragmented figures, architectural shapes and gestural details.
The restrained palette of ochre, charcoal, grey, cream and powder blue gives the work a particularly sophisticated presence. Heavy black outlines and loosely worked passages of paint lend the composition an immediacy characteristic of the continued influence of the European avant-garde on French artists during the postwar period.
The painting is presented in an ornate giltwood frame, whose traditional profile and decorative corner details provide an elegant counterpoint to the distinctly modern composition. The warm, time-softened gilding beautifully complements the ochre ground of the painting.
An exceptionally decorative example of mid-20th-century French Modernism, the work has considerable scale and would make a commanding focal point in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
