Late 20th Century Cubist Portrait of a Woman

An expressive late 20th-century oil painting on canvas board depicting a stylized female portrait, executed in a distinctly Cubist manner with strong influences from the modernist tradition of Pablo Picasso.

The composition presents a wonderfully abstracted female figure, her elongated face rendered through an interplay of angular forms, exaggerated features and bold black outlines. Particularly striking are the dramatically stylized eyes, asymmetrical facial structure and voluminous charcoal-grey hair, which introduce a compelling sense of movement and sculptural dimension.

Executed in a sophisticated palette of muted olive green, ochre, powder blue, ivory and charcoal, the painting balances expressive brushwork with areas of restrained colour. The richly textured background provides a beautiful contrast to the figure’s pale complexion, while the delicately rendered blue garment lends an unexpected softness to the otherwise graphic composition.

The artist’s confident handling of form and deliberate distortion of traditional portraiture recall the visual language of mid-century European modernism, particularly the Cubist explorations of the female figure.

Signed with initials in the lower right corner, the painting is presented in a simple black frame, providing a clean, understated contrast to the expressive composition.

A wonderfully decorative and characterful example of late 20th-century modernist painting, equally compelling displayed individually or incorporated into a thoughtfully collected gallery wall.
