Tessellated Stone Box with Floral Pietra Dura Inlay
A beautifully executed vintage decorative box by Maitland-Smith, featuring an intricate floral stone inlay set within a richly textured tessellated stone exterior.
The rectangular box is distinguished by its striking oval composition of stylized calla lilies, meticulously rendered in warm shades of coral, peach and rose-coloured stone. The flowers are accented by slender green stems and set against a dramatic black stone ground, framed by an oval border of beautifully variegated grey marble.
The composition recalls the traditional Italian art of pietra dura, in which individually cut pieces of coloured stone are fitted together to create elaborate decorative imagery. The contrast between the expressive floral motif and the restrained ivory-toned exterior lends the piece a particularly sophisticated quality.
The exterior is finished in finely arranged sections of natural stone, revealing subtle variations in colour, veining and texture throughout. The hinged lid opens to reveal a deep black fabric-lined interior, complete with ribbon supports and brass-toned hinges.
Both sculptural and functional, the box is ideally suited for storing jewellery, treasured correspondence or small personal objects. Equally compelling displayed closed on a cocktail table, desk or within a collected interior.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear and natural variations in the stone. There is a visible chip and associated loss to the stone veneer at one rear bottom corner, as photographed. The black fabric-lined interior exhibits minor signs of age and use. The condition is consistent with the piece’s vintage character.
