Modernist Ceramic Portrait Plate in the Manner of Pablo Picasso - 20th Century
A wonderfully expressive vintage ceramic portrait plate, discovered at an estate in New York City and displaying the unmistakable influence of Pablo Picasso and the European Modernist ceramic tradition of the 20th century.
The shallow circular form is decorated by hand with a striking abstracted face rendered in loose, confident black brushwork. Soft washes of cobalt and powder blue form the background, punctuated by touches of turquoise and a rhythmic border of deep cobalt daubs. The intentionally spontaneous quality of the decoration gives the piece the character of an artist’s studio work, with subtle irregularities in the brushwork and glaze contributing to its individuality.
The reverse is particularly appealing, retaining additional hand-painted color studies together with a freely rendered signature or inscription. Its painterly execution and highly stylized facial features recall the extraordinary experimentation with ceramics that took place within the European Modernist movement during the mid-20th century, particularly the expressive ceramic works associated with Picasso and Vallauris.
Found in a New York City estate, the plate has a wonderfully collected quality and would sit beautifully amongst Modernist ceramics, works on paper and other artist-made objects. Its diminutive scale makes it particularly suited to display on a tabletop easel, within a cabinet of curiosities, or incorporated into an art wall.
