Modernist Still Life of Pears, 1963

A wonderfully expressive mid-century still life depicting three pears arranged on a simple white plate, painted in 1963. Executed in oil on board, the work has a distinctly modernist sensibility, with loosely worked brushstrokes, simplified forms and a particularly rich use of colour.

The fruit is rendered in warm ochre, russet, amber and muted rose tones, set dramatically against an intensely saturated emerald green ground. The restrained composition and deliberately painterly handling lend the work a charming European character, recalling the still-life traditions explored by modernist painters throughout the mid-20th century.

The surface retains visible, energetic brushwork throughout, particularly within the green background and softly modelled fruit. The artist has reduced the composition to its essential forms, giving this otherwise traditional subject an appealingly graphic and contemporary quality.

Signed and dated 1963 at the lower right.

The painting is housed in a highly decorative period frame with a deep oxblood-red inner border, gilt detailing and a carved outer moulding featuring stylized foliate ornament. The warmth and patina of the frame complement the jewel-like palette of the painting beautifully.

A particularly decorative mid-century work that would sit equally well within a traditional, collected interior or amongst more contemporary furnishings.

Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear and patina to both the painting and frame. Minor losses and surface wear to the frame are consistent with age and add to its character.
