Natural Shell Dish on Sculptural Silvered Seashell Base

An exceptionally charming vintage decorative dish by Maitland-Smith, combining the organic beauty of a natural seashell with an elaborately sculptural silvered metal pedestal.

The dish features a beautifully formed natural shell, distinguished by its softly undulating silhouette and luminous, pearlescent interior. Delicate variations of ivory, champagne, pale gold and subtle iridescence lend the shell a wonderfully sophisticated quality, with each natural variation contributing to its individual character.

The shell is supported by an extraordinary silvered metal base, intricately modelled as an assemblage of overlapping seashells, including scallops, conches and spiralling marine forms. The richly textured composition creates an almost sculptural quality, with beautifully articulated ridges, recessed details and a softly aged silver finish.

Particularly appealing is the contrast between the delicacy of the natural shell and the substantial, architectural quality of its silvered base. The result is a wonderfully whimsical yet refined decorative object, characteristic of Maitland-Smith’s imaginative approach to luxury furnishings and accessories.

Equally beautiful displayed as a standalone objet d’art, the piece may also serve as a sophisticated catchall for jewellery, small personal treasures or other decorative objects.

A distinctive example of late 20th-century decorative design, bringing together natural materials, exceptional detailing and a timeless maritime influence.

Condition

Very good vintage condition, with gentle surface wear and subtle patination to the silvered metal consistent with age and use. The natural shell displays inherent variations in colour, texture and form, contributing to its unique character.
