Neoclassical Ebonized & Gilt Armchairs with Hoof Feet - PAIR
A striking pair of vintage Neoclassical-style armchairs, combining sculptural ebonized frames, gilt detailing, caned backs and generously upholstered loose seat cushions.
The chairs are particularly distinguished by their unusual decorative vocabulary. Sweeping arms terminate in gilt animal-mask terminals, while additional gilt foliate mounts and rosettes articulate the seat rails. Fine gilt lines trace the profiles of the arms and frame, creating an elegant contrast against the deep black finish.
Of particular note are the finely shaped legs terminating in stylized hoof-form feet. This animalistic detail gives the chairs a wonderfully theatrical quality and recalls the classical and Egyptian-inspired motifs that periodically reappeared in 20th-century Neoclassical furniture design.
The gently curved backs retain their woven cane panels, finished in black to integrate with the ebonized frames. The seats are fitted with substantial loose cushions upholstered in a small-scale black and ochre-gold geometric textile, complementing the gilt decoration without overwhelming the architecture of the chairs.
The pair has a strong, almost architectural silhouette, balancing the formality of classical furniture with a more glamorous 20th-century sensibility. Their generous proportions make them particularly successful as occasional or fireside chairs, while the sculptural details allow them to stand beautifully on their own.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. There is some loss and rubbing to the black painted finish of the caning, along with scattered wear, marks and minor losses to the ebonized and gilt surfaces consistent with age and use. These variations have been retained as part of the chairs’ vintage character.
