Trio of Early 20th Century Classical Busts

A charming assembled collection of three early 20th century Parian ware busts depicting female figures drawn from classical history and mythology.

Each sculpture is rendered in the distinctive unglazed white porcelain associated with Parian ware, prized for its ability to emulate the soft, luminous appearance of carved marble. Finely modeled faces, classical hairstyles and draped garments give the group the character of miniature Grand Tour sculpture.

The trio varies in scale and form, giving the collection a particularly appealing, gathered-over-time quality. One bust is identified “Rachel” along its base, while the smallest example is elevated upon an architectural pedestal accented with fine gilt banding.

Parian ware became especially fashionable during the 19th century as an accessible means of bringing the appearance of classical marble sculpture into the domestic interior. These later examples continue that tradition, translating the language of antiquity into intimate decorative objects.

Displayed together, the varying heights and silhouettes create a wonderful sculptural composition. Equally compelling arranged amongst books, atop a mantel, or incorporated into a collection of classical and Grand Tour objects.
