Terracotta Seated Female Figure - 1960s
A wonderfully expressive vintage terracotta sculpture depicting a seated female figure in a quiet, contemplative pose. Modelled with an appealing combination of naturalism and loose, gestural handling, the work has the intimate character of an artist’s studio sculpture.
The figure is shown seated with her knees drawn toward the body and her arms gently wrapped around them. Rather than pursuing highly polished anatomical detail, the artist has allowed the modelling of the clay to remain visible throughout, giving the surface a tactile, hand-worked quality particularly evident across the figure, hair and irregularly formed base.
The terracotta has been finished with a dark bronze-toned surface and areas of verdigris green, creating the appearance and depth of an aged bronze while retaining the warmth and texture of the underlying clay. The resulting patina is especially attractive, with subtle variations across the surface that emphasize the sculptural modelling.
An evocative decorative work with a distinctly mid-century to late 20th-century studio-art sensibility. Beautiful displayed independently on a console, pedestal or within a collection of paintings and objects.
An old handwritten label to the underside identifies the work as “Meditation: Clara” and notes the artist as Rosslyn White; this attribution has not been independently verified.
Terracotta with applied patinated finish.
Dimensions: 11.5” W x 9” H x 6” D.
Condition: Good vintage condition with surface variation, rubbing and irregularities consistent with the hand-modelled nature of the piece and its age.
