Tessellated Faux Tortoiseshell and Brass Decorative Box

A sophisticated vintage decorative box by Maitland-Smith, distinguished by its elegant curved silhouette, intricate tessellated faux tortoiseshell exterior and beautifully contrasting brass detailing.

The exterior features individually fitted rectangular tiles arranged in a meticulous, brickwork-inspired pattern. Rich shades of chocolate brown, amber, oxblood and near-black create a wonderfully variegated surface, with subtle tonal shifts beneath the polished finish.

The box is further distinguished by its brass detailing, with slender brass borders elegantly outlining the lid, curved front and exterior edges. The warmth of the metal provides a striking contrast to the richly coloured tessellation, emphasizing the architectural form and refined craftsmanship of the piece.

The gently concave front and sweeping contours lend the box a distinctly sculptural quality, while the removable lid reveals a beautifully finished wood-lined interior.

Characteristic of Maitland-Smith’s luxurious approach to decorative objects during the late 20th century, the piece combines traditional craftsmanship with a sophisticated, modern sensibility.

Beautiful displayed on a cocktail table, writing desk or library shelf, it is equally suited for storing jewellery, correspondence or treasured personal objects.

Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear, minor scratches and gentle patination to the brass detailing. One rectangular piece of the faux tortoiseshell tessellation is missing from the exterior, as shown in the detailed photographs. The wood-lined interior exhibits minor signs of use.
